Here is the bracket for the next round.  Top seed teams go ahead and decide which faction you are playing and set up your game.  Because of A2's higher winning percentage they are seeded above C2.  Good luck and let the games...continue!

Okay.  1st round is up to date as of 5/19.

 Tournament balance:

Allies 10 /  Axis 12

Axis and Allies Spring Tournament 2011

I have a question about Double Elimination.

It seems that everyone that loses once gets a chance to redeem themselves and go for the gold once more.

This is great and all, except what about Winner of 11?

If you NEVER lose any battle EXCEPT the final, you don't get another go. Seems strangely unfair that someone who loses to a lower skilled team can still compete, but someone who loses to the top team doesnt get another shot?

Am I missing something here?

docbrown's picture

Usually in a double elimination tournament, you're not eliminated until you lose two games.  Game 11 is the last game of the undefeated teams.  The loser of that game goes to top of the 1-loss bracket in game 13.  The loser there will have two losses, and the winner faces off against the one remaining undefeated team in game 14.  It's fairly common for game 14 to be a rematch of game 11.  If the loser of game 11 also loses game 14, he's eliminated (having lost two games).  If the loser of game 11 wins in game 14, the two teams usually go one final tie-breaker game (since both have lost one game at that point and one of them needs to lose one additional game to be eliminated from the tournament).

Team Barka, PunjabiAssassin, Clemsafe pull through for a victory.

i believe us axis scum are about ready to make america and the allies eat kraut and rice!

GeneralDestro's picture

Okay guys.  Sorry for the delay.  This has been a very busy week.  I have your current results posted.  Feel free to set up your next games.

Looks like Barka's team will alternate to play axis this game and Drkill's team will alternate to be the Allies.

Holbrook's team will play as allies and Whirledpiece's team will be axis.

To answer a question from earlier this week, yes if an undefeated team loses during game 14 there WILL be a rematch.  You must lose 2 games to be eliminated.  That is pretty standard, but I am clarifying to all that this is how we will play it if that scenario occurs.

docbrown's picture

GD - Can you post the roster from your recently finished game?

Also, InGeneral's team is on the way to a victory.  No capitals have fallen yet, but allies are closing in on Germany and have nearly double the Axis income.

GeneralDestro's picture

USA - Whirledpiece

USSR - Slay

UK - Generaldestro

Germany - Drkillitz69

Japan - tigerpiper

Good game to my opponents!  There were some very suspect rolls in this game which I need to add to stats rage,  but that doesn't take away from their victory.  A win is a win is a win.   The game must go on!

docbrown's picture

InGeneral's team will win within another turn or so (just have to finish the conquest of Japan).  We take on InGoodguys.  Both teams played Allies in the first round, so I assume InGeneral's team (being the higher seeded team) gets choice of sides per the discussion in the other thread.

InGeneral's picture

We are discussing how we wish to proceed in the next game, as soon as GD confirms doc's last post (which we believe is correct), I'll set up the next game and send out the invites to InGoodguys team.

GeneralDestro's picture

Doc is right, as usual!  :)   I will be updating the bracket momentarily.

Invites sent to team ingoodguys

We are underway:

InGeneral: Germany

Bromley86: Japan

ingoodguys: UK

phantom: US

Filmore: Russia

My team still awaits an invite from Holbrook and company.  Please remember that the allies team is responsible for setting up game and sending invites.  Thanks.

holbrook81's picture

waiting for response from Tsmit.  he seems to be MIA

GeneralDestro's picture

Any word from tsmit?  We are falling behind.

holbrook81's picture

no, can Grasshopper and I play Axis? otherwise, can we have someone else take the third position and deadbeat immediately?

GeneralDestro's picture

I don't mind that option, but would like a consensus from the other tournament members before we do it.

docbrown's picture

It doesn't bother me in general, but I think if tsmit doesn't show up by the time their next game rolls around they probably need to forfeit.  The basic idea behind the tournament is that teams have to do well both as Axis and as Allies to win.  You can't win playing only one side.

On a related note, I had a suggestion for later games in this round of the tournament.  At some point teams may face each other a second time.  I propose that if two teams have already faced each other once in the double elimination round, they have to switch sides the next time they play.  As an example suppose my team (InGeneral) loses to InGoodguys and advance to game 12 and end up meeting up with Bodie's team again (who we faced in game 3).  The first time we played them, we were Allies and they had Axis.  If we faced them in game 12, we would take Axis and they would get Allies regardless of what side we had in game 9 and they had in game 10.

This may not come up at all, or possibly only in one or two situations.  One particular possibility is that the two teams meeting in the finals play 2+ games vs. each other.  I think in the spirit of the game, they should alternate sides in successive games.  If they play a 3rd game against each other (they meet earlier in the brackets and again in the finals with the team that lost the first time winning the second match causing them to go to one final game), sides should be assigned by coin toss.

GeneralDestro's picture

Not sure about the forced forfeit.  Perhaps we could allow them to take on another eliminated player who is ranked  close to tsmit.  What do you guys think?

I sent a message to tsmit, btw.

I agree doc.  Teams who face each other a second or third time will need to play the opposite force that they played as in the first matchup.  This will prove all around "well-roundedness?" .

I would like to hear some input about the team holbrook situation from the other teams.

ingoodguys's picture

I was thinking , maybe if they needed another player, they could get one with a lower ranking, or one similar, to the player that couldn't play.

our team will be in a similar position, as Filmore & I are going on a mission trip on June 5 & will be gone for a week, either the game will have to wait, or we will need a sub.  we have a player that we have played with in the past, hydra, that could fill in.

just a thought, if Bromley misses a game, that leaves the entire human race for him to choose from.

docbrown's picture

It may just be me, but I'd rather give people an extra week than try to find substitutes.  Subbing players doesn't really meet the whole idea of "well-roundedness" since they might be in for one game but not another.  You might find a substitute that was a top-notch German player but doesn't communicate enough to give you a shot at an allied victory.

For InGoodguys, I'd say just let their game wait a week before starting.  In this other case, if tsmit is responding to messages and says he'll be able to play in another couple days, just wait on him.  If he doesn't respond, let holbrook's team take Axis this game and give tsmit a bit more time.   But I think we're too deep into the tournament for substitutions.  If it was still in the elimination round, that's one thing, but I'd be opposed to it at this point.  And this is nothing against Holbrook and company.  In my Indian Ocean tournament, we started subbing in and out, and by the time the finals rolled around, there were some teams in which neither player had been on the original team, others with players that had been on 2-3 different teams, and so on.  I think only about 2 of the 12 teams remained fixed all the way through.

GeneralDestro's picture

Perhaps doc is right.  Maybe we should give tsmit another week and then consider forfeiture.  I do not want to make this decision, because I have a conflict of interest as this is my next opponent.  I have still have heard nothing from tsmit.  Maybe he is on vacation or something.  I recently had a death in the family, so I know we need to be patient.  Sometimes real life gets in the way.

phantom's picture

I support waiting for players unless you have no contact with them for several days perhaps a week.  I will be happy to wait for goodguys & Filmore.  Speaking of life getting in the way, many of my friends/neighbors were just a breath away from death...I live in Joplin.  Have had friends staying with me who survived by laying flat in their bathtube while their house was blown away.   Been hectic here to say the least.

holbrook81's picture

destro, I think you should set a time deadline and after that we will forfeit.  I don't like the idea of substitutes, and if it's our turn to be allies then we should have to bow out.

punjabiassassin's picture

Phantom, its amazing we have someone here from Joplin, its a pretty small city, 150k I think?

Hope all is well with your friends and family, I'm sure its a nightmare out there.

docbrown's picture

Phantom - I live in Huntsville, AL, and we were in the crosshairs of one of the EF-5 tornados in the April 27 outbreak.  Electricity to every single customer in the entire county was out for several days because all of the major transmission lines were destroyed.  Fortunately we didn't suffer any damage apart from no electricity for a week.  But seeing something similar happen in Joplin and the outbreak the following couple of days really brought everything home again for us.  It starts to feel like everything is back to normal, but having been so close to those things (there is a huge amount of damage only a half mile north of our house), I've noticed I have a far less carefree attitude about the weather lately.  Anyway, glad to hear that you're safe.

holbrook81's picture

They have electricity in Alabama??

McCarthaigh's picture

Glad y'all came thru it. Laying in your bathtub while your house gets torn, away around you...I cant imagine. I am a sailing fool, so knowing that the weather can do a number on ya is not unfamiliar, but man. A blessing on your house, mazeltov, mazeltov....

GeneralDestro's picture

Sorry guys.  My modem has gone out and I just got a technician in today.  Anyways, I have sent tsmit a final notice that by the end of day June 2nd that his team will forfeit.  I sent him a private message on May 26.  This means he will have had a full week to respond.

This is to notify holbrook and grasshopper as well.  Sorry it has come to this, but since you are okay with it, we will move along if tsmit does not respond by the deadline.  Thanks for being a good sportsman, holbrook.  It would really skew the tourney results to continue with a sub.

tsmit's picture

hey guys, thanks for your patience. Wow, y'all really were gracious in waiting!

I went on vacation and put my computer away, deeply away. I thought that my loss with Hopper had eliminated us from the tournament, so that no one would be waiting on me.

Thanks again for your patience. I'm back, and glad to climb back in the ring!

Barka's picture

I'd rather wait on people than try a substitution.  PV and I had to forfeit continuing in the doubles tournament when PV grew disconnected - C'est la vie.  The way around that I guess is to have larger teams so you have a larger team to pick from.

As this isn't for money or anything expecting some teams to not be able to continue to the end of the tournament isn't a big deal.

Bromley86's picture

InGeneral's team won against Ingoodguy's.

The game had successful mid-game Sealion and end-game Downfall, so pretty unusual.

InGeneral's picture

You beat me to it!  Another +10 points for Bromley's ranking. ;)

InGeneral's picture

GD:  I believe we are at an impasse on our 3rd match of the double elimination round which is InG/Brom/docbrown vs Barka/punjabi/clemsafe

The rules for side determination in round 2 (I gathered from a post on such in the other thread) are:

1. Who played what in their most
recent game. If the teams played different sides in their last game, then they
switch. If they both played the same side, proceed to #2:

2. Win % throughout the tournament
gets their choice if side. If this is a tie, proceed to #3:

3. Best record vs. common opponents
throughout the tournament gets their choice. If this is a tie, proceed to
#4:

4. Coin flip.

1. We both played Axis last game.

2. We both have a win % of 100%

3. We are both 2-0 vs common opponents (InG B1 defeats A3, A2... Barka A1 defeats B3, B2)

4. Therefore we need a coin flip. :)

If I've muddled anything up. please advise.

Thanks,

InG

InGeneral's picture

GD:  Barka and I have completed a coin flip via www.flipacoinonline.com (nice site Barka!).  Once you confirm everything I wrote above is accurate, we'll proceed with the results of our coin flip and get our match started.

punjabiassassin's picture

we did.

GeneralDestro's picture

Thanks for taking the initiative InGeneral.  If both sides are agreeable with this coin flip, then proceed.  Who won the coin flip btw?

Bracket updated.  Sorry.  We just got the Whirled vs. Holbrook game started.

Any word on the status of the Nothlit vs. Bodenhey game?

ingoodguys's picture

so here we were:

as allies, we had factories in both Sinkiang (USA) & Egypt(UK), both ready to put ground forces in play.  between the allies 3 players, probably close to a dozen fighters in the area between Sinkiang , Russia, & Egypt, with Africa pretty well secured for the allies, & I'm starting to slobber about a possible upset of the #1 ranked team.

of course then Ingeneral retreats his tanks to the seashore, buys a couple more transports to add to the 2 he already had, puts a SAM in each country on the Russian front, & his fleet to block my fleet patroling in the Med,

next turn he transports 8  tanks, & flys 8 planes to UK & I'm completely unable to do a thing to stop it.  UK conqured, Axis go on to secure the victory.

And that's why they are at the top of the food chain.  good game guys.  amazing

GeneralDestro's picture

Well, this one's been going on since March.  I would assume we will be done sometime in July.  Keep an eye out for the next one.

InGeneral's picture

Barka's team won the coinflip, and have seleted to play Allies.  We will begin on Monday as docbrown is out of town for the weekend and will play in this game for us on the Axis side.

ingoodguys, thanks.  Executing a successful sealion that early in the game is always a nice feather in the cap.  :)

You guys played excellent, and sneaking Japan away from us towards the end was brilliant.  I look forward to our next meeting.

GeneralDestro's picture

Looking like the Holbrook team is going to come out on top if we don't get some extraordinary luck this turn.  Missed 2 turns this past weekend with work.  Sucks to devote so much time to the tourney and not be able to put your best foot forward when it really counts.  Wish BattleForces had a built-in pause button/adjustable timer.  Its been mentioned before in suggestions.

Good game to Holbrook and company!  They did their part.

Its awful quiet.  How are the other games going?
